Studying abroad in the Netherlands, France, Belgium, and Germany
Preparing for my Trip
Introduction
Throughout the course of this study abroad experience I will be creating a series of video logs that discuss and develop on specific inquires. Rather than choosing five separate but related topics to explore in my inquiry posts, I have decided to explore one idea in depth. The representation of diversity in classrooms and schools is something of a “hot topic” right now, due to the recent political and media discussion on race and privilege. It is of a personal and professional interest to me, since it holds great importance on furthering the inclusion of all students.
The specific topic I will discuss in my first inquiry post is what a typical Dutch classroom looks like. More specifically I want to inquire on the demographics of the students. This is in relation to their socioeconomic, ethnic and religious backgrounds, as well as the presence of any LGBTQ youths. The foundation of any classroom is its learners and this will be a good place to start in my inquiry. Building on this question will allow me to gain a better understanding of the cultural competencies in classrooms abroad compared to those in the United States.
